Another 5K PR! - Gear Your Rear in Gear

After getting cleared yesterday to run this morning, I focused on doing well in Gear Your Rear in Gear 5K. The weather was much warmer than the last 5K that I did. In fact, it is a very unseasonably warm today with a high reaching near or at 90 degrees today.

Once the race started, Josh and I took off at a very comfortable pace. In fact, I ended up passing a lot of people on the race course in the 1st mile with Josh amazingly keeping up with me most of the way. I ended up a little in trouble after mile 2 when I started feeling tired and slowing down to a 9:24/mi pace. But I set myself up for a 2nd 5K PR in a month. After I finished, because it was SOO hot out, I asked a lady who was watering her lawn to spray me down with the hose. The water really helped me to cool down a bit.

Now I am relaxing inside of the house where it's actually cooler than inside.

Mile 1 8:30
Mile 2 8:44
Mile 3 8:52
0.11 mile 00:55 (8:25/hr pace)

Finish time - 27:02
Avg Pace - 8:42/mi

Short Weekend Summary

I had a busy and crazy weekend. Here's a summary of what I did.
  • I ran the Pride to Run 10K with a new PR of 58:00 (9:20/mi) - old PR 1:02:38
  • Complete my 8 miles - with included the 10K.
  • Went with Josh to go buy a new car in the South Suburbs
  • Allowed Josh to get us lost after we got off the Pace bus and walked into Bumblefuck (aka Richter Park)
  • Watched Josh haggle for over 2 hours with a snake to get the price he wanted on a new Honda Fit
  • Raced home in the new car so I can meet up with a friend after being an hour late
  • Discovered this morning that some MoFo HACKED into my computer and sent out a SPAM (my apologizes to those many have received it!) - but totally erased my address book.
  • Watched the Chicago Gay Pride Parade with friends until it started raining the 1st round of showers
  • Battled a MOB of people - lose patience - while trying to get home
  • Had dinner with Josh's mom and boyfriend to celebrate the new house, new car, and Josh's NORMAL people hours (no more waking me up at 3:30 am - yayyy!) all in one week.

That's all! Tommorow I go back to work (boo!) while Josh deals with the home inspector as the last part to make the house purchase a done deal. Then a 30 minute recovery run.

Shamrock Shuffle Race Report Coming Soon...

Peeps, you are going to have to wait. But I can tell you at least that I SHATTERED........SMASHED...and set a new 8K PR from a race I ran over 17 months ago by over 12 minutes(and had a HORRIBLE race report - not mention the triple ankle sprain too.) No ankle sprains today. I am still waiting for the official race results since I don't have a Garmin....yet, which means an official race report will have to wait.

I might even ran FASTER than a certain someone too, which will be a first for me. But something that's been coming over the last year. We will see. Right now, I am very tired right now and need to do some couch therapy.

To be continued.....

HUGE 5K PR!

Today was a great day for Josh and I to run our 5K - the Frank Lloyd Wright 5K Races - in his hometown in Oak Park. The weather was perfect - a little windy, but I did not mind it at all. After we finished the race, we even ate a pancake breakfast in his former high school cafeteria - first time in 20 years for him (I think I just made him REALLY old...oops!) His mom cheered us on as we hit the home stretch of the race, which really helped.

Well, at the end of the race, the finish time was all that count. We finished BIG and holding hands across the finish line too.

I did not just break sub-30:00. I broke sub-29:00.

OLD PR - 30:27 (Lung Run 5K)
NEW PR - 28:56 TODAY

I thought I was going to throw up or pass out to the finish during the last 0.1 mile as Josh encouraged me to keep my speedy pace.

Mile 1 - 10:10 (VERY comfortable pace!)
Mile 2 - 9:11 (This felt very good!)
Mile 3 - 8:36 - I focused on finishing FAST!
Mile 0.1 - 0:56

I will have a few more pictures from today's race as soon as Josh's mom provides them to us. After the race and breakfast, we headed home to crash and take a short nap in order to regain our energy.

Now I have to focus this week to prep for next Sunday's 10K. I am SO ready!

Race report later....

.....and it will be a great one too. I set a HUGE PR for this 5K.

More much later....

5K Race Report - NEW PR!!

Yes, I did it! I set a new PR for this race. It was not much, but it still counts! I am simply amazed that I accomplish this. Yesterday, I ended up going to my chiropractor to get my shins taped, which really helped a lot. (Just don't go to a music festival afterwards and stand for 2 hours - NOT GOOD!)

Anyways, I woke up this morning at 6:15 with an optimistic attitude. I was determined to run this 5K and finish. Yes, I have the shin split issue, but I know I can overcome. I have done it in the past and have succeeded.

Josh and I along his friend, Shea walked to the bus stop and took it to near the starting line near the CARA "drinking trough" south of Diversey. We arrived around 7:45, which was great timing because the Athletico people were there starting to give pre-race stretching. I was the 2nd person in line and was worth the wait. The PT was very nice and helped me as she stretched me by providing some tips to deal with the shin splints (besides being totally amazed with taping job on my legs). The stretching really felt so good because I was a little tight still in the calves. After the stretching, I prepped my lungs and then preceded to do a quick 1/2 mile warm-up to get my legs ready for the 5K. The warm-up was great. I spent a few more minutes before I went to the starting corral for the 5K. I was starting to feel myself get pretty excited to start the race. Then we were OFF.

I felt the energy of the crowd during the 1st mile. Because I was wearing Josh's Garmin, I caught myself going too fast at 8:15/mile pace - Oooops! I quickly corrected it because I know that I was pay for it at the end of the race. There were no signs of the shin splints during this time compared to the training run where they hit right before the first mile. That's an awesome sign!

After I passed the mile 1 marker, I felt good, but also starting to struggle a little bit. I kept on looking for Josh and Shea, which kept me motivated. Eventually, I saw them on top of the Fullerton bridge at the 1.43 mile marker as I ran under it. I shouted to Josh, "14:30" giving me my current time.

Then I headed into the hardest part of the race where I struggled mentally as well as physically. My legs were not hurting, but it was my lungs that were trying to catch up with the pace. I slowed down a little bit to get them some time so I did not get sick or pass out. The frustrating part was seeing all of the runner coming back the opposite direction and looking for the turn around point. Once I passed the mile 2 marker, I told my negative attitude to SHUT THE FUCK UP and let me RUN.

I was able to pull my 2nd wind and push myself through the last 1.1 miles. As I came to the bridge and went through, I saw Josh and Shea and again, who cheered me on and keeping me motivated since I was only 0.25 mile away from the finish. In the end, the 2nd and 3rd mile ended up being very consistent in pace and helped me to gain the new PR.

As I got closer to the finish, I kicked ass and took names. After I got through the finish corral, I saw Josh and literately collapsed in his arms. He carried me to the stinky pot-a-potties where I desperately needed to use them. I was totally worn out and exhausted. After a Jamba Juice sample and a banana, I started to feel a little bit better.

Then I got myself a SECOND professional stretch - at Josh's insistence - with another booth that was doing them free. I was even half-assed tempted to go the National School booth where they were doing free chiropractic adjustments, but I knew that I could make it until Monday AM. Oh well!

Then we head to the hospital where I work at so I could change into something dry in my office. Afterward, we headed to the Chicago Half-Marathon expo where Josh and Shea picked up there race packets. I enjoyed all of the free goodies and took home a lot of stuff on top of the stuff from the race before heading home.

Now I am sitting here - tired and slowly losing energy - feeling good about myself. Tomorrow's Josh's day so I will be helping him out and turning the tables onto him. Right now, I need a NAP.

Today's race
Mile 1 - 9:19
Mile 2 - 10:18
Mile 3 - 10:17
Unofficial Finish Time: 30:27 - NEW PR!
Avg Pace: 9:58/mile
