10 mile long run....DONE

Well, after this run being postpone a whole day due to very, very nasty storms moving in on Saturday morning. It scared Sadie so much that she ran underneath the bed and tried to hide. The strong winds blew EVERYTHING off of my bathroom window ledge COMPLETELY out of the bathroom and into the hallway. We usually leave the bathroom window open to allow air to move through the apartment. Josh woke up to find that there was water all over the bathroom floor. He thought one of us left the shower on, but it was Mother Nature who made the water mess. I come to find out that my neighborhood got hit the hardest, but lucky enough to still have power. My TNT even cancelled the group run due to the wild weather. I had already made the call before I went to bed and made a more stronger case when a huge lightning bolt hit across the street waking me out of bed at 1:30 am.

It was nice to postpone it, especially I had to work yesterday afternoon on my normal day off for just two hours. We had to deal with union picketing, but that got cancelled when there was a threat of lightning in the air again. It scared off all of the union people. (Yayyy!) I was not happy about coming in and missing out on the day trip that was previously planned, but went home to relax when I was done.

I woke up this morning at 5:15 am to get ready for my long run. I had 10 mile planned with 12 miles set for next weekend. The HM is less than a month away so I need to spend the next few weeks conditioning myself for the race. This is more apparent when I was doing my run. It did not look for me at all during the first mile when my shin started tightning up like it did several weeks. I was determined to the mileage done. The weather was perfect for the long run - cool air with a gentle breeze. Once I got the leg loosened up by slowing down, I started feeling great and ready to continue on the mileage. Josh come along and followed me during the run with Gatorade as I needed it (which I didn't need much). I was passing people constantly along the route and felt like I could do the mileage. I took my Mint Chocolate GU at mile 5 and determined to finish. I started to lose steam around 8.5 miles, but determined to finish the 10 miles.

Mile 1 - 9:41
Mile 2 - 9:50
Mile 3 - 9:52
Mile 4 - 9:46
Mile 5 - 10:03 (OMG - was I THAT slow?!)
Mile 6 - 9:57
Mile 7 - 9:53
Mile 8 - 9:45
Mile 9 - 9:32
Mile 10 - 9:22

Total time: 1:37:48
Avg Pace: 9:45/mile

I am not happy with the splits. They were a lot slower than what I care for, but I still have two more long runs before CDC. I am determined to get my preferred corral start and need this race to get me there. In fact, it's my only shot. I just need a 1:50:59 or faster finish time to get me there. It will help me keep on track for my finish goal at Chicago. I just need to do more speedwork during the next two weeks and keep up with the training.

This afternoon, I have my fundraising party at the Mystic Celt. I love incorporating beer with charity work. I am getting really close to my fundraising goal. I would like to surpass it this year by $1000. I hope to be able to do that.

Tommorow, I have my first interview in a MONTH. I hope to get something out of it. Keep your fingers crossed for me. Then I will do my hour of cross-training since I just ran today just to keep my legs loosened up.

Later! 90 DAYS until Chicago Marathon

Whenever you can incorporate charity and beer, it's gotta be a good thing!

Great job on the run, Denise. You are doing so well!

Fantastic speeds!

Mint Choco-Gu's sound pretty darn good. I'll have to try that sometime.

You're doing so great - happy training!

Good job on your 10 miler! I'd be jumping up and down for joy with splits like those. Anyway, they don't give medals for training runs.

Don't be down on your splits.  You can't run race pace EVERY weekend.

I think you are right where you need to be for a great performance at CDC.

Don't be too upset by your splits. Remember you had to slow down because of your shin and you were going over a longer distance.

In my book you did awesome!

That was really nice of the storm to come through and clear everything up for you :-) I agree with FML... Save something for race day!!! You are going to rock it!!!

Those splits look good to me! All but one are under 10 min/miles. That's awesome for a long run!
