Short Mileage today

Well, it's going to be the shortest mileage that I will be running this week. It is only 3 miles. It was the most simplest run that I will be doing for awhile. I woke up at 8:30 this morning. It was a little bit harder to wake up this morning today to run. I don't know why, but it was. Once I was up, I was up. I changed into my running clothes and praying that my tops were dry from hand-washing them last night. They were not dry when I went to bed, but most of the them were dry now. I ate a good pre-run breakfast and prepped to go out for my run. I headed out to my favorite run spot, Lake Calhoun. I made sure that I stretched before my run. Then I was off. The beginning of my run felt good. But as I made it to the end of the first mile, my darn shins started aching. I did not have this problem on Satuday. I was wearing the same shoes as Saturday. I was wearing my new socks that I won yesterday. But I was able to point that the surface that I was running on was different than compared to Saturday. The surface around Lake Calhoun is mostly concrete mixed with gravel. The surface along Mississippi River Road was asphalt and felt comfortable to run on. I am starting to think about switching my running locations now that I felt the difference. Plus I know that I still need new shoes, which I plan to buy on Saturday during the 30% TNT sale at Marathon Sports. But as I kept on running, I was able to push myself through a minimal pain. I kept on mentally chanting, "Pain is temporary. Pain is temporary." It seemed to work. Before I knew it, I was finished with my run. I was able to finish in good timing too. Once I was home, after my usual smoothie stop, I put some ice on the areas that were sore and did more stretching. I will put more ice on the sore areas again tonight when I got home. Tomorrow's run will be 4 miles and Thursday at 6 miles. Today's work-out 3 mile run 32:51 10:57/mile 333 calories burned

Ooohhh - so sad to hear about your hurting shins! I've been battling the same issue and it suuuucks! I'm pretty clueless beyond the icing and ibuprofen on helpful tips so any tips you can pass my way... ;) Hope they really are temporary!

I always think of a favorite ultra quote - whatever hurts at the beginning is guaranteed to not be what hurts at the end :)

of course, you should never run through excruciating pain, and always listen to your body. (lest anyone think I promote ignoring pain in your body)

asphalt does have an amazing difference with impact compared to concrete. glad you were able to push thru the toughness of getting up in the morning and knock out this 3 miler! WTG!!

Something to consider to keep running at Calhoun is to run on the "cow path" that has been created...it's a bit longer run as it's next to the bike path and not the walking path, but it's where I usually run. Lake Harriet you can do the same thing. An even better surface is one of the many limestone bike paths around the city...or going to trails. As long as you mix up the surface you run on, you should be good to run anywhere.

Funny how you get to a point where 3 miles is just a short run. It wasn't to long ago that I was like, Hey!!! I ran 3 miles last night!!!! Now it's an off night. Good luck with the aches and pains.

way to go---my spinning coach says "pain is weakness leaving the body" I don't know if I believe that but whatever works.
