4 mile run

I am amazed that I got through my run today outside. Last night, we receive a lot of rain. The lightning and thunder woke me several times out of a sound sleep. Plus the one slight thing running through my sleepy head was "CRAP, I won't be able to run outside today."" Well, I was wrong. When I woke up at 8:45 this morning, the sun was shining and felt very nice. I quickly got ready and was out the door by 9:50. I headed to Mississippi River Road so I could run my 4 miles today. My legs were a little sore last night, but I took some Advil and ice them using packages of frozen peas. I was able to sleep soundly. They were okay by this morning. When I arrived at my destination, the air felt good. I stretched out before I ran. Then I was off. Everything felt fine until I hit mile 1. I started to feel a little sore around my shins. I slowed down a bit and then stopped to stretch a bit. It seems to help a lot and was able to start up again and finish. I was able to get things loosened up and relaxed as I finished my run. But the temps felt extremely warmer than I when I started. In fact, the temps went up 10 degrees over the course of the run. I was dripping with sweat when I finished my run. After I finished my run, I stretched and then headed home. Then I decided to go where I have not gone before - at least since my last marathon, I decided to have an ICE BATH. Oh my! On my way home, I headed to the corner store and picked up a bag of ice. When I got home, I had a slip of my bottled smoothie while my husband showered, then I prepped an ice bath. I made sure that I did not pour the ice into the tub until AFTER I was inside. It seemed to help. I sat in there for 10 minutes before hopping out and then taking a shower. Then I finished the smoothie before heading out for some errands and then off to work. So far I am feeling okay right now - after taking two Advil during the day. I plan to ice again just to keep the muscles relaxed. I have one more run tommorow before a day of rest on Friday. I hope to feel a little bit better tommorow. I know that my legs are not used to the schedule yet so I will give it some time before getting concerned. Plus the pain has been a dull ache and nothing more than that. My TNT coach just e-mailed me a list of more stretches to use before and after our runs. I hope it may help a bit and make the runs more easier. Speaking of Team in Training, I have my donation page set up. I hope you have a chance to check it out. Today's work-out 4.14 mile run 45:32 436 calories burned 10:59/mile

I use bags of frozen peas too! But I also have this ice pack for the knee by Tru-fit--I recommend it since you can freeze it or heat it (Walgreens sells them). Also, how did you brave the tub of ice? I think I would scream. Great run!

Smoothie and an ice bath. Whata combo. Keep on truckin, or running in this case.

Ice bath, whoa! You are brave. And that is a crazy temprature rise while you ran, wow.

GL with the TNT, and GL with your soreness!

I never thought of adding the ice after you're in the bath. Smart move. You last longer. And that's the point, isn't it?!

Good call on adding ice after...I've done it both ways!! I haven't ice bathed in a long time though...I've even read some things (need to get further in my book) about actually using warm and doing other things to keep legs feeling good.

Where exactly do you start running on the trail?
