Lesson #1: Wake up MUCH earlier to run

Well, I planned my run today, but I know now that I should have planned it a little bit earlier. I woke up at 8 am this morning and immediately got dressed for my morning run. I also started drinking fluids since it was very humid outside. The morning news was already saying that it was in the low 70's when I woke up. As I ate and prepped my lungs from my run, the temps rose quickly. By the time I got out, arrived at my destination, and ready to run at 9:45 am, the temp were in the upper 70's to low 80's. UGH! Well, I had 24 oz of fluids in my system over a period of 2 hours before I ran. I was well hydrated. I made a quick potty stop at the sailboat marina before I started moving. Then I was off and running. The first 1/2 mile was fine, but I started having problems after that. First, my shin splints - which I had NOT had problems with - came back with a BANG in my left shin and then my right shin. At one point, my foot felt numb. I had no choice, but slow down a little bit - down to a power walk. Double UGH! At mile 1.3, I was able to get back to my usual comfortable pace after a few more attempts between walking and running along with another sip of water. Then I had to deal with the side of the lake where it feels like you are running literately in HELL. The heat was oppressive and intensive with NO breeze from the lake - like the other side of lake. On top of that, the medium amount of pollution in the air made it a little bit difficult to continue to run. I had to slow down a little bit during the last 0.75 miles of my run. But I was able to push myself a little bit during the last 0.2 mile of my run without injuring myself. As I cross the 3.0 mile mark, I clicked my stop watch at 35:20 - 2:10 slower than my previous run. I did not care about my time. I just wanted to safely complete my run. After my completed my run, I walked to back to my car to cool-down and stretch. I was SOAKED from the sweat. I made my way to Whole Foods to get some sports drink and other things to eat. Then I grabbed my smoothie from Jamba Juice and drank my sports drink as I was waiting for my finished smoothie. I had 3/4 of the 16.9 bottle empty when I received my smoothie. I was thirsty. I headed home with my goodies, stretched more, and took a very nice shower. I then grabbed my ice pack and placed it on my left shin - leaving it on there for 10 minutes. It hurt like hell, but really felt good by the time I was done. I then ate my yummy salad that I put together at Whole Foods and some applesauce with another 16 oz bottle of water. The run took a lot out of me today by 3 pm. I decided then to take a little 75 minute nap, which I don't normally do. But I was SO glad that I did. My body needed it. After I woke up from my nap, I did some more errands: a much needed hair-cut, magazine shopping, and some more grocery shopping (stuff I missed yesterday). During the time that I was running errands, the sky got UGLY and some much needed rain come through the Twin Cities area. The area near Lake Calhoun and Lake Harriet got a really soaking. But, the rest of the evening was spend relaxing. Tommorow's cross-training day and weight training. Wednesday will hopefully be another running day, if I wake up a little bit earlier time. Today's work-out 3 mile run 35:20 11:46/mile

I so wanted to get out into the rain to run...:) It was actually cool then!! I opened windows for about 30 minutes while that was going on. Definitely a time to get up early and get a run in prior to the heat...you can always take a nap after!!

You're wise to not worry about finishing times when the weather's as bad as it's been and the air quite foul as a result. I sue wish it would rain down here too.

yep, can't worry about time in conditions like these...although i must say 70-80 sounds positively balmy! i'm sure it was the humidity that did you in. yay you, you did it! that's what matters.
